CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Transport Ministry and local police are cautioning motorist as heavy fog caused by recent cold temperatures in Thailand’s Northern region, blankets morning roadways.

In Chiang Rai Province, temperatures have been recorded at 13.9 degrees Celsius, while mountaintops have temperatures of 9-10 degrees Celsius, resulting in fog. Visibility on the Chiang Rai – Dong Mada Road has been reduced to less than one kilometer and vehicles have had to turn on their high-beams lights to avoid collisions.

Meanwhile in Phayao Province, early on Tuesday local police had to facilitate traffic on Phaholyothin Road near Phayao Technical College and City Hall where visibility was reduced to only 30 meters, while the temperature in the morning was recorded at 13.8 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department indicates that the thick fog will persist until around December 25, when temperatures are expected to moderate once again.
