Christmas Lights Cost a Lot To Run, Here's How To Cut The Bill In Half

(CTN News) – Those planning to decorate their homes with Christmas lights this year have been warned they could be hit with huge bills that may run into thousands of pounds.

British consumers who love to decorate the outside of their homes with silhouettes of Christmas characters using rope lights will rack up the most debt, according to insolvency provider Credit fix.

If five of these signs are up on December 1 and taken down on December 31, it could cost £510 to operate them for six hours per day. Waiting two weeks to install them would reduce the cost to £279, a saving of £231.

In order to assist Brits in estimating the cost of their Christmas decorations, Credit fix has created a Christmas Lights Calculator. This tool helps them to determine how much they could save by delaying their decorations or investing in different kinds of lighting.

Santa rope light archways are the most expensive lights to operate, costing £6.08 each day to run for six hours, which amounts to more than £188 per month.

During December and until January 5th – the 12th day of Christmas – homes with ten Christmas characters lighting up for more than six hours a day may have to pay over £1,000 in additional electricity charges.

On the other hand, an average set of indoor mains-powered fairy lights would cost just 12p to run for six hours a day, while an LED inflatable, such as an inflatable Santa, would cost £3.67.

In order to determine the cost of operating popular Christmas lights this year, Credit fix gathered information regarding the energy consumption of the lights.

The regional manager at Credit fix, Layla Johnson, commented: “We all understand that this Christmas will be more challenging than usual. As energy costs increase, other seasonal expenditures, such as bigger food shopping trips and presents, are likely to place further pressure on household finances.

“Like all household expenses, it pays to be aware of how much you’re spending rather than burying your head in the sand, as many of our customers tell us once they have taken control of their debt.” In light of this, we decided to compile the data and develop a debt repayment calculator.

Results are surprising – it is reassuring to learn that a popular set of indoor fairy lights is the most affordable. It may even be possible to operate a fun freestanding decoration for less than £1 per day.

“People could wait a week or two before plugging in the lights, and still enjoy the magic of Christmas Lights  on a budget if they don’t wait to cut back on the number of lights they put up this year.”

Visit the Christmas Lights Index online to view the complete list of 16 different lights, their costs, and what could be saved if you waited to turn them on.

What are the most popular Christmas lights?

Mini lights — your quintessential Christmas tree lights — are the most popular. C6, C7 and C9 bulbs are strawberry-shaped and the most traditional of Christmas lights.
