CHIANG RAI – Despite the claims by Chiang Rai’s Chamber of Commerce that the new regulations on foreign vehicles entering from China at the Chiang Rai’s border checkpoint is harming tourism, Chiang Rai’s Wat Rong Khun has been receiving thousands of visitors.

Most of whom are tourists from China, Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) in Chiang Rai attracts nearly 10,000 visitors daily, most of whom are Chinese.

Renowned artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat who developed Wat Rong Khun urged relevant bodies to adjust to the current trends to strengthen the tourism industry.

Chalermchai Kositpipat, said officials at the temple are now giving out clear guidelines to Chinese tourists and Chinese tour guides regarding the dos and don’ts, and continues to welcome the large influx of Chinese visitors to the temple.

Signs have been posted around the temple giving clear instructions of guidelines and restrictions written in Thai, English and Chinese.

More local attractions in northern provinces have increased the number of Chinese-language signs around their properties, to inform Chinese tourists of the do’s and don’ts that are appropriate in public places.

A recent survey has found that more Chinese visitors are complying with the rules. In religious places, most Chinese visitors are observing the dress code. Those who arrive wearing improper clothing are willing to use sarongs provided by temple guardians.

Most Chinese tourists said they were impressed with the attractions of the North and would definitely come back. Regarding the anti-Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai sentiment among some mainlanders, they commented that those who boycott traveling to the North are in the minority.
