CHIANG RAI – The Tourism of Thailand office in Chiang Rai is working with local tourism operators to promote a travel route from Chiang Rai to the Provinces to Ta Chi Lek, Keng Tung and Maung La and southwestern China.

Mr Issara Satapanaseth the Director of Chiang Rai’s Tourism Office, the office and local tourism operators have agreed to launch travel packages, aimed at reviving the mystical old cities that are linked by R3B road from Thailand to Myanmar and China. The popularity of this route has been in decline since China closed its check point connecting Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture and Muang La in 2006.

The new program, dubbed “Progressing Chiang Rai, connecting ASEAN” is aimed at promoting the package tour project that begins at Thailand’s Mae Sai check point to reach Myanmar’s Tachilek, than continuing to Kentung and Muang La.

Chiang Rai tourism operators have expressed the hope that the program will soon expand to cover the Southwest of China, Laos and Vietnam after the ASEAN Economic Community becomes a reality at the end of 2015.
