Wiang Chiang Saen sub-district has recently reported an outbreak of dengue fever with over 100 patients, prompting district officials to launch the campaign.

CHIANG RAI – Members of the Wiang Chiang Saen Municipality Council in Chiang Rai province, along with public health and environment officials and volunteers are handing out electric mosquito swatters, repellents and anti-mosquito lotion to community members in Wiang Chiang Saen sub-district in a campaign to curb the spread of dengue fever.

Mayor of the Wiang Chiang Saen Municipality Chayakrit Nitsaisuk said the project is aimed at raising public awareness on the prevention of the mosquito-borne disease. The campaign includes handing out of pamphlets with advice on the prevention of rampant dengue fever to local people, especially households with dengue fever cases.

Wiang Chiang Saen sub-district has recently reported an outbreak of dengue fever with over 100 patients, prompting district officials to launch the campaign. The packages of repellents, anti-mosquito lotion and mosquito bats handed out by the officials are expected to lower risks for dengue fever.

According to the latest finding from the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of Thailand (PIDST), the number of adult dengue fever patients is on the rise in parallel to the country’s growing population.

President of the PIDST, Medical Dr. Usa Tissayakorn said that this year the number of dengue fever patients in Thailand was 2-3 times higher than that of last year.

She explained that most of the patients are children aged 10-14 years old, followed by teenagers aged 15-24 and small children aged between 7 and 9 years old. The northeastern region has the highest number of patients, followed by the southern, northern, and central regions respectively.

Dengue fever has multiple levels of severity and is becoming one of the nation’s serious public health concerns, as the number of adult and teenager patients rises. The number suggests that the increase is due to the nation’s growing population which makes the spread of the disease by means of mosquito becomes easier.
