CHIANG RAI – Three Thai Nationals were arrested on New Year’s Eve allegedly attempting to deliver 4 million baht in crystal methamphetamine in Chiang Rai’s Muang district.

A Police team, led by Chiang Rai’s Superintendent Pol Col Manop Senakul, set up a sting operation following a tip that a drug gang planned to conduct a drug deal in Chiang Rai City.

Superintendent Pol Col Manop Senakul said they arrested Mr. Akkharachai Somsi, 41 after he arrived carrying a blue  bag containing four kilograms of methamphetamines with a street value of 4 million baht in a vacuum sealed bag of tea.

After Chiang Rai Police extended their investigation two more suspects, Chalermpol Khadthasema, 47, of Lampang and Leesu Waoyer, 28, of Chiang Rai’s Mae Fa Luang district were apprehended in the parking lot of Central Plaza Chiang Rai shopping mall.

The trio later confessed that they had been hired to deliver the drugs on promises of receiving 13% of proceeds from sales of the drugs.

The three traffickers will be held in police custody at Chiang Rai police station.
