Chiang Rai Parents told to Safeguard their children against HFMD

CHIANG RAI – The Department of Disease Control (DDC) has reported a rise in the number of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases and urged parents and child care centers to safeguard their children against infection.
According to DDC Director-General Dr Amnuay Gajeena, more than 30,000 children in Thailand have this year been diagnosed with HFMD during the transition from the rainy season to winter and three of the cases were fatal.
Most of the infections were found in children of 1-3 years of age within Chiang Rai, Surat Thani, Phayao, Nan, and Phuket.
HFMD is effects small children younger than 5 years old, symptoms include fever, skin rashes and blisters on the hands and feet and in the mouth.
Dr Amnuay advised parents and child care centers to ensure hygiene among children and seek medical attention for them immediately if any symptoms of HFMD are detected.
