CHIANG RAI – Authorities in Chiang Rai have called on their Myanmar counterparts to help intercept drugs smuggled across the border following a clash between police and drug traffickers in Chiang Rai which killed a commissioned police officer.

The issue was raised in the 77th Thai-Myanmar Border Township Committee meeting in Myanmar’s Tachilek border town on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a police officer was killed and two others wounded in a gun battle with drug traffickers, in a forest in tambon Wiang of Chiang Rai’s Wiang Pa Pao district.

Two drug suspects were also killed in the gun fight. The suspects are believed to have smuggled drugs from Myanmar into Fang district of Chiang Mai, police said.

Police proposed posthumously promoting the slain policeman, Pol Sub Lt Thapanan Chattrakul, a deputy inspector of Wiang Pa Pao police station, by seven tiers to the rank of police colonel.

The injured officers – Pol Sub Lt Sakchai Reein and Pol Snr Sgt Maj Prachum Srijompang, of the same station – were taken to Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Chiang Rai’s Muang district for treatment. Both are in a safe condition.

Chiang Rai police chief Wanchai Suwansirikhet said police will search Mae Poon Lang village where one of the traffickers killed in the shootout, Yahae Jasee, had once lived in order to track down the other perpetrators, believed to number about nine.

At the meeting, Thai representatives raised the issue of drug smuggling across the border. They also asked Myanmar to help stop the smuggling of chemicals used to manufacture drugs.
