Bt150 Million of Assets Seized from Chiang Rai Business Owner

CHIANG RAI – Authorities in Mueang Chiang Rai have arrested business owner Somphan Leocharoen for allegedly obtaining assets worth over 150 million baht with drug money.
Daily News Online reported today that Somphan Leocharoen, 60, the owner of petrol stations and other businesses in Chiang Rai Province, was taken into custody during a raid on his house by 50 policemen and public officials.
The raid was led by Pol Maj Gen Prayat Boonsri, deputy chief of the Region 5 Provincial Police, Pol Col Sihahart Prayoonrat, secretary-general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office, and Permpong Chawalit, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board.
Authorities seized assets including 70 bank accounts, titles for four plots of land, two new cars, and 69 million baht in cash.
The action was taken after Mr Somphan was suspected of making financial transactions related to drug dealing in partnership with a convicted drug dealer, identified only as Soros, who is being detained at Khao Bin Prison in Ratchaburi province.
Mr Somphan denied any involvement with Soros.
