BANGKOK – A British couple who have been cycling around the world have been killed in a crash in Bangkok.

Peter Root and Mary Thompson, both 34, were riding their bikes near the capital Bangkok when they were run over by a pick-up truck.

They were in their 23rd country when the tragedy struck, having already cycled through Europe, the Middle East and China.

On their website, Two on four wheels, the couple posted a travel journal, photographs and short films from the 23 countries they had visited.

Mr Root’s devastated father Jerry yesterday described them as a “golden couple” who “loved life”.

His mum Marian said they had insisted on cycling all the way, despite having to travel through a number of danger hotspots including Iran and Afghanistan.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are aware of the deaths of two British nationals in Thailand and we are providing consular assistance.”

Thailand is well known for its perilous roads with more than 13,000 people killed and almost one million injured each year in accidents.
