CHIANGRAI TIMES – Myanmar authorities have coordinated with their local counterparts to seek cooperation from Thailand in tightening security at the Thai-Myanmar border following two explosions at a hotel near the border town of Tachilek, according to a senior Thai army officer.

Col Thanadpol Kosaisawee, commander of special forces of the 3nd Cavalry Regiment’s Phamuang Task Force in Chiang Rai told reporters that the two bombs exploded at around 7am at a golf course of a hotel in Tachilek, two kilometres from the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at the border checkpoint of Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

He said four Myanmar people were slightly wounded from the explosions and police were present at the golf course as it was hosting a golf tournament held to mark next week’s Armed Forces Day.

Armed Forces Day, on March 27, marks the day in 1945 when the army rose up against occupying Japanese forces.

The wounded police officers were sent to a hospital in Chiang Rai.

Col Thanadpol said the local Myanmar border committee has contacted its Thai counterparts to step up security measures along the border to prevent any persons with ill intentions from entering Myanmar to cause any untoward incidents.

He said the request for cooperation came after a man drove a car into an electricity post in Tachilek, causing a total black out in the Myanmar province.

Myanmar authorities believed that the man may be involved with the bomb attacks
