BANGKOK – Drug Suppression police have seized 4.49 million methamphetamine pills found in an apartment in the largest meth bust ever in Bangkok.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung said Tuesday the tablets and 60 kilograms (132 pounds) of crystal meth were smuggled from Myanmar.

He said they were destined for sales in the capital city and nearby provinces.

The value of the drugs, hidden in dozens of pieces of luggage, was estimated at 1.5 billion baht ($50 million).

Police said they arrested three suspects, including a 16-year-old boy, and confiscated four pistols from them. One of the suspects said they were hired to look after the drugs.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung called on Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra to cooperate more closely with the government in suppressing illegal drugs in the city.

“Since I was appointed deputy premier, one year and eight months ago, the city governor never once attended any of the meetings to solve narcotics issues,” Mr Chalerm said on Wednesday.

Earlier this week in Chiang Rai drugs were discovered when a group of seven men crossing the Sai River from Myanmar to Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district dropped their loads and fled after being challenged by soldiers. The sacks they dropped were found to contain a total of 1.66 million yaba tablets and 43 kilograms of “ice”, narcotics with an estimated street value of more than Bt600 million.

In related news, a team of narcotics officials in Nakhon Si Thammarat arrested a network of nine suspected drug dealers in six different locations yesterday and seized 4,300 yaba pills and 14 grams of “ice”.

Officials said one of the suspects, Kosol Ardkay, admitted it was the fourth time he had been arrested, and had confessed to ordering the drugs from a male prison inmate he knew only as “O”. Kosol said he did not know at which prison “O” was being detained, but said his gang had threatened to kill him if he did not pass on the money from his drug dealing to them.
