Policemen looking at the scene of a grenade attack outside the Criminal Court in Bangkok on March 7, 2015

BANGKOK – National Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri has reported that Police have detained three people in connection with the grenade explosion on Saturday night outside Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court.

Thai police today accused a network of ”red shirt” supporters of the toppled government of trying to destablise the kingdom after the bomb attack.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha today called on Thais to be the “eyes and ears” of security forces in order to boost foreigners’ confidence in Thailand after the second explosion in the capital Bangkok in just over a month.

“We ask the public to be the eyes and ears of authorities because security must come first. We must rebuild confidence for foreigners,” Prayuth told reporters. “I will not bow to bad people.”

Two men were detained on Saturday night after a brief shoot-out with security forces that followed a grenade attack at the Criminal Court, which caused minor damage to the building’s car park but no injuries.

National Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri said they are hunting another man and two women from the same apparent cell.

“Based on our investigation they have links with the red shirts,” he said.

One of the suspects, Mahahin Khunthong, told reporters yesterday that he and another man were hired for 20,000 baht (HK$4,700) to carry out the attack and that other attacks were planned in order to “prompt United Nations intervention”.

“One of us rode the motorcycle and another threw the grenade. There were plans to stage attacks at other locations so that UN intervenes in Thailand,” Mahahin told reporters.

“I did not want to do this but in order to support my family I offered to be the driver.”
