ANG THONG – Two people are dead and 49 others, including foreign tourists were injured when a Bangkok-bound tour bus from Chiang Mai overturned on the Asia Highway in Chaiyo district on Monday morning.

Pol Lt Narong Tala-upla, the duty officer at Chaiyo police station, said the accident occurred about 5.30am at kilometer marker 63 in tambon Chaiyaphum of Chaiyo district.

Police, medical teams from Chaiyo and Pho Thong hospitals and rescuers were rushed to the scene.

Chan Boonsadee, 59, the driver, who was seriously injured, said the bus was carrying 48 passengers, about five of them foreigners, and three crew from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.

The driver said he fell asleep at the wheel while passing through Chaiyo district and lost control of the bus, which ran off the highway and overturned.

Two of the passengers died at the scene. They had not been identified. The others were injured, many of them seriously. They were rushed to nearby hospitals.
