CHIANG RAIĀ  – Director of the Bureau of Environment Geology under the Department of Mineral Resources, Sombun Kosittanont, has warned people in Chiang Rai of landslides and flash floods in the hillside areas and Mae Lao River banks.

According to Mr. Sombun, the areas are prone to the natural disaster as rains start to come down while the post-quake aftershocks still loom over the province and its vicinity. He said the aftershocks also cause him to give warnings on weaker structural integrity of small reservoirs in the quake-affected zones.

Regarding the recent discovery of a new fault line in Nan Province following an aftershock in the area last Saturday, Director Sombun clarified however that it was actually a part of the Pua fault line that triggered the 6.5 richter scale quake in Chiang Mai earlier this month.

He said the aftershock was a natural occurrence as the earth adjusts itself after an earthquake, while giving his estimate that the aftershocks would dissipate within a month.

Meanwhile, Chiang Raiā€™s Ecclesiastical Provincial Governor, Venerable Phra Kru Pipat Rattanapong and representatives from the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University yesterday presented construction materials donated to quake-hit temples in Mae Suai, Mae Lao and Phan Districts, Chiang Rai Province.

Residents of Mae Mon Village in Huaychomphu Sub-district have built temporary classrooms for Mae Mon Wittaya School in Muang District. According to the school headmaster, all of the schoolā€™s buildings are deemed structural unsound following the quake. The buildings are now too dangerous to be put to use and subjected to be pulled down. The school has requested a budget of 3.4 million baht from the Education Ministry for the reconstruction and is waiting for an official reply.
