Bradley Steer, 22, is recovering in hospital in Thailand

BANGKOK  – Bradley Steer from Guildford is recovering in a hospital in Thailand after suffering severe injuries in a bus crash which killed five people.

Bradley Steer was among 38 people who were injured when a bus traveling from Bangkok to Chumphon came off the highway and flipped over on February 6 at around 3.45am.

The five people who died included a 23-year-old French woman, who was sitting in front of Bradley on the bus, a Thai woman, and three Thai men, one of whom was sitting next to Bradley.

“Bradley says he recalls hearing a loud bang and the coach lurching from one side, to the other before eventually flipping and the next thing he remembers is waking up in some bushes,” said his sister, Lucy, who is has flown out to Thailand to be by his side along with their brother, Matthew, mother and father, Roger and Beverley, and Bradley’s girlfriend, Laura Dunne.

“Bradley somehow found the strength to call for help and some people came over and carried him onto the back of a truck where he remained in excruciating pain until the emergency services came.”

Bradley was taken to hospital in Chumphon, where he was put on a ventilator as he was unable to breathe by himself, and his wrists and ankles had been tied to his bed. After travelling 19 hours, Bradley’s parents arrived at the hospital in Chumphon.

“Mum and dad finally made it to Bradley’s beside where they were greeted by a critically ill son in what can only be described as a squalor of a hospital,” Lucy added.

“After some difficulties with his insurer, and having to sit and watch Bradley quickly deteriorate further, my parents eventually decided to pay the £7,000 fees to have him airlifted by air ambulance to Bangkok where he had a bed waiting in a private hospital as no state hospitals had space.”

It was upon arrival at this hospital in Bangkok that the family learnt the extent of Bradley’s injuries. He had compression to both of his lungs, broken ribs and a broken clavicle bone.

He had also contracted a bacterial infection from the Chumphon hospital, which resulted in a fever, so he was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit.

“In the previous hospital he was just on a normal ward,” Lucy said.

“The doctor advised us that if Bradley had been in that hospital one more day without the care he required, he would have most certainly lost his life.

“Again due to complications with Bradley’s insurers we do still not know if his treatment will be paid for but six days on and Bradley has made a remarkable leap forward on his path to recovery.”

Bradley spent three days in ICU, with chest drains in both of his lungs. Having now left the ICU, doctors have said they expect him to make a full recovery, but Lucy said he will not be able to fly home for a few weeks.

After hearing about Bradley’s situation, friends were quick to organise charity events and donation drives to help the family with the insurance costs and other expenses.

Marie Lee, a friend of Bradley’s parents, set up a fundraising page, which has so far generated £3,800 through 82 donations, and is expected to rise.

Jaymey Thornton, 24, who has known the family for 10 years, is organising an event called ‘Pray for Brad,’ at the MKB restaurant at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel in Guildford on Wednesday March 6.

A charity football game will also take place at Stoke recreation ground, on Recreation Road, Guildford on Sunday February 24, organised by Alex Burton.

“The support and well wishes Bradley has received have left us as a family completely overwhelmed but grateful to be returning to such wonderful friends and supporters,” Lucy said.

To get tickets to Jaymey’s MKB event, either send her an email at jaymeythornton@aol.com or call her on 07769325366.
