The constitutional Court found Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra guilty of abusing her power

BANGKOK –  Days after the Constitutional Court’s “Judicial Coup” against Yingluck Shinawatra the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has too concluded that Yingluck Shinawatra did neglect her duty to prevent corruption in the rice pledging scheme and an impeachment motion against her will be forwarded to the Senate.

NACC Commissioner Vicha Mahakhun revealed that the commission had cast a unanimous vote to remove Ms Yingluck from her post as Prime Minister after holding its final deliberation on the fraud case surrounding the government’s rice mortgage program.

Ms Yingluck, as the Chairperson of the National Rice Policy Committee, was found to have failed to address corruption problems in the program, leading the NACC to interpret such failure as dereliction of duty.

According to Mr Vicha, the NACC pointed out that it had already notified Ms Yingluck twice that the rice scheme was vulnerable to corruption and could incur substantial losses on the government but such warnings fell on deaf ears. With heavy debates on the issue in Parliament, the commission was adamant the then-Prime Minister must have had sound knowledge of it and yet no actions were taken by her.

Based on reports from the Office of the Auditor-General, the rice pledging scheme has created an accumulated loss of 300 billion baht and corruption is rampant in every stage, from the registration of participating farmers to the release of stockpiled rice.

As a result of the NACC’s ruling, Mr Vicha said a motion to impeach Ms Yingluck from office would be put in the hand of the Senate to consider next week. Although Ms Yingluck’s premiership has already been terminated by the Constitutional Court earlier, she will face a five-year ban from politics if the senators vote against her.
