Security Forces in Chiang Rai on Alert for New "Happy Drug" from Myanmar

Border security forces stationed along the Myanmar border in northern Thailand’s Chiang Rai province have increased border surveillance in the Mae Sai district to prevent the smuggling of a new “happy drug” from the Myanmar township of Tachilek.

According to Thai drug control officials, the “happy drug is readily available in nearly every entertainment venue in Tachilek. It costs between 3,000 and 6,000 baht per 20g packet of white powder made into pill form or capsules.

The drug is less potent than methamphetamine, but it will keep users awake and in a good mood, allowing them to spend the entire evening in a pub or bar.

The “Happy Drug” is sold under numerous brand names and is packaged in what appear to be condom packets.

When the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic started in 2020, the drug first appeared; however, it has only recently gained popularity among patrons of nightclubs in Tachilek, a Myanmar border township notorious for narcotics and lawlessness.

They stated that the Happy Drug has not yet been discovered on the Thai side of the border but that local authorities have increased road checks for suspicious vehicles and individuals who may attempt to smuggle the drug into the Kingdom.
