Young Woman Runs into Cyclist Group Killing Three, Injuring Six on Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai Highway
CHIANG RAI – Pol Maj Suriyan Chansai, has reported that three cyclist were killed and six others injured when a car rammed into a group of cyclists on the Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai highway in Chiang Mai’s Doi Saket district on Sunday morning.
Pol Maj Suriyan Chansai, an investigator at Doi Saket police station, said the incident occurred at about 5.45am on the Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai Highway.
Witnesses told police that while a group of about 30 cyclists from San Sai Cycling Club in Chiang Mai were pedaling past kilometer marker No.8 on an out-bound lane to Chiang Rai, a Toyota Yaris car, which was traveling at high speed, rammed into the group from the rear.
The three cyclists killed were Saman Kantha, 62, Pongthep Khamkaew, 40, and Chaiwat Yonglan, 63.
Six cyclists were injured, two of them seriously. They were admitted to Doi Saket Hospital.
Also injured in the incident was the 24 year old female driver of the Yaris, a third-year student of a local university.
The officer said the driver was intoxicated at the time and would initially be charged with reckless driving causing death and injury.
