BANGKOK – A yakuza member who has been under the custody of the Thai authorities was successfully extradited to Japan on Wednesday. He is facing charges in Japan including attempted murder but has been detained in Bangkok since 2009.

Yoshizo Bono, a 45-year old South Korean member of an organized crime group is accused of attempted murder in an incident in Osaka last October 2006. Bono is part of the Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest and most famous organized crime syndicate in Japan. He escaped to Thailand, where officers of the Department of Special Investigation have been mobilized leading to his arrest in 2009. Bangkok Remand Prison became Bono’s detention centre until his extradition.

The Criminal Court in Bangkok approved Bono’s extradition on the 23rd of August. From Bangkok Remand Prison, Crime Suppression Division (CSD) officers escorted the yakuza member to the CSD office, where the staff of the Japanese Embassy picked him up at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok then brought him back to Japan.

Yamaguchi-gumi, an organized crime syndicate founded in Kobe, is known to have branches and influence throughout Japan. But with the changing times, their influence has diminished while members have to keep a low-profile. As an anti-organized crime legislation was passed in October 2011, some yakuza members are considering leaving the country for better financial opportunities
