BANGKOK – A head-on collision between a van carrying 10 foreign tourists and an 18-wheel truck left two dead — a driver and an American national — and eight other passengers injured in Muang district on Sunday afternoon.

Pol Lt Col Boonnark Trachoo, an investigator at Muang Sra Kaew police satiation, was quoted as saying that the fatal crash resulted from failed overtaking.

The officer said the driver identified as Somsak Ployngarm was driving at high speed on the opposite lane when he tried to overtake a car in front of him. However, he failed to return to his driving lane soon enough, causing his van to collide head-on with one side of the truck.

Somsak and an American passenger were killed on the spot. The remaining nine passengers, which included two German nationals, a French, three American, two Chinese and a Cambodian, sustained injuries and were taken to  Sa Kaeo Crown Prince Hospital. The nationality of the dead passenger is not immediately known.

The accident occurred in front of a PTT NGV gas station on Highway No 359 (Khao Hin Sorn – Sra Kaew) in tambon Sra Kwan at about 3pm, Thai Rath Newspaper reported on its website.
