Thailand’s Pimsiri Sirikaew Brings Home Silver Medal

Thailand’s Pimsiri Sirikaew has won a silver medal in the women’s weightlifting 58kg

Chiangrai Times– Thailand’s Pimsiri Sirikaew has won a silver medal in the women’s weightlifting 58kg division on Monday, the first medal for Thailand’s Olympic team in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

After three heart-broken days which saw two weightlifters fail to produce a medal and a boxer surprisingly crash out in the first round Thai fans were elated when she made her Medal winning lift.

Thai hopes almost vanished in the beginning when 22-year-old and compatriot Rattikan Gulnoi managed to lift only 100 kg each in the snatch event and trailed behind eight competitors.

But the macho-girl Pimsiri salvaged her pride in her pet clean and jerk lifting a brilliant 136 kg for a total 236 kg which earned her the silver medal.

Pimsiri Sirikaew’s mother is so happy she plans to become a nun.

Amornat Sirikaew’s proud mother told Thai media she had vowed to enter a Buddhist monastery for nine days if Pimsiri won a medal, a pledge she will fulfill Friday when Buddhist Lent begins.

Fireworks lit the sky in Pimsiri Sirikaew’s rural hometown Monday after she won a silver medal in the women’s 58-kilogram weightlifting event. Cheering crowds watched the event on giant outdoor television screens.

Her Mother says the victory shows that dreams can come true. She adds that before heading to London her daughter had a dream in which she met three boys, named Gold, Silver and Bronze. Two of the boys stood still but the one named Silver ran and embraced her. – Anna Wong
