CHIANG RAI – Thailand’s Minister of Interior Gen Anupong Paojinda has urged authorities to tighen the control of burning activities in Chiang Rai and 5 other Northern Provinces.

Gen Anupong Paojinda asked authorities to raise public awareness on the effects from burning to the ecology and health of the people.

Gen Anupong Paojinda said the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has been ordered to coordinate prevention and mitigation efforts on the haze issue in affected provinces.

Prevention measures will include the strict prohibition of burning activities in the risk areas and the establishment of fire prohibition times depending on each area’s buring situation.

The measures will focus on duty and participation principles in each area, said the Minister of Interior.

The DDPM Director-General Chatchai Promlert insists that the department will work closely with the affected provinces to control all burning activities in open areas, especially burnings on roadside, in forests, and on agricultural land.

The public will be asked to cooperate by refraining from burning garbage and agricultural wastes to help reduce the severity of haze.

Meanwhile the authorities have been providing water spray from tank cars to increase the humidity while decreasing the dust, as well as gathering the wildfire and haze control equipments.

The public in the haze covered area are advised to avoid staying out in open areas for a long period of time, and to use handkerchiefs or masks to cover their nose and mouth to protect themselves from inhaling dust particles, says the DDPM Director-General.
