BANGKOK – Thailand’s Navy decided on Tuesday to buy a South Korean-made frigate which will cost some 486 million U.S. dollars and be delivered in the next five years.

The cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, approved the Thai navy’s plan to procure the South Korean frigate with installment pay spreading from next fiscal year until fiscal 2018.

The 3,700-ton ship will be built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. as a modernized version of the Kwanggaeto-class destroyer, the navy’s secretary office said in a statement.

The South Korean frigate will be equipped with stealth technology to evade radar and sonar scanning and maneuverable alongside other combat forces in land, air and maritime missions, including anti-submarine warfare modes.

The new frigate, whose construction is scheduled to begin later this year and complete in 2018, will replace the HTMS Putthayodfa Chulaloak frigate, which will be decommissioned in 2015.

In addition, the Thai navy plans to procure another frigate to replace the HTMS Putthalertla Napalai frigate, scheduled to be decommissioned in 2018.
