Thai Memorial for Murdered Oswald Heinrich Duvel

Oswald-Duvel and son

CHIANGRAI TIMES – Memorial services will be held on Saturday in Thailand for a South African man who was allegedly murdered by his ex-wife and in-laws. Andrew Barnes, a friend of the murdered man, Oswald Heinrich Duvel, said the family would attend prayers at a temple in Bangkok.

This would be followed by a cremation service, which would be attended by family and friends, later on Saturday.

Speaking from Bangkok, Barnes said Duvel’s brother, who had flown in from Australia, would leave Thailand with Duvel’s ashes on Sunday.

Thai police chief Lt-Gen Nares Nanphathote told Sapa that Duvel’s ex-wife Karachin and her mother had confessed to the murder.

The 50-year-old’s body was discovered in the foothills of Saraburi province, north of Bangkok, on Sunday morning.

He was wearing only his underpants and a wristwatch, and was lying next to a partially dug grave.

Nanphathote said the killing appeared to be “a conflict of the family, about the son”.

Duvel, who was born and raised in Piet Retief, had been involved in an ongoing custody battle with his ex-wife in the Thai courts.

The South African left his Bangkok home on Saturday morning, but did not return.

Nanphathote said in broken English his information was that the ex-wife had invited him to sit in her Toyota Fortuner with her mother to discuss a custody agreement.

Unbeknown to Duvel, a third person was lying behind the back seat and as they talked, he allegedly fired the three fatal shots.

Nanphathote described the man as the “new husband”, but various Thai media reports have described him as being the ex-wife’s brother, half brother or adopted brother. He has been identified as Surasith Pacchathepmonkol
