Rio Olympics Latest Medal Count:How Many Golds Does USA, China, Australia And Others Have So Far?
RIO – Roughly five days into the 2016 Rio Summer Games, the United States has taken an early four-medal lead in the race with top competitor China but the two powers are currently tied with three gold medals apiece.
As Monday morning, the U.S. has won 12 total medals compared to China’s eight, with Australia next up on the leaderboard with six and Italy picking up seven total medals. Australia is technically ahead of the Italians because of its three golds compared to Italy’s two.
South Korea and Hungary are next up with two gold medals apiece, while 11 other countries, including Russia and Great Britain, have claimed at least one gold.
Team USA has specifically shined in the pool, claiming two of its three golds thus far in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay thanks to Michael Phelps and his squad, and Kathleen Ledecky owning the 400-meter women’s freestyle.
Ledecky also helped the U.S. secure silver in the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay, while fencer Alexander Massialas was second in the individual foil competition, and Madeline Dirado won silver in the women’s 400-meter individual medley.
The U.S. won three of its four bronze medals in the pool as well, in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke, the women’s 100-meter butterfly, and the women’s 400-meter freestyle.
Nineteen-year-old Virginia Thrasher picked up the Games’ very first gold medal on Friday in the 10-meter air rifle competition, while Phelps padded his own world-record with 19 career gold medals.
The Chinese have shown just as strong a proclivity in swimming and shooting as the U.S. Minxia Wu and Tingmao Shi claimed the women’s synchronized three-meter springboard for gold, and Mengxue Zhang won the women’s 10-meter air pistol competition. Qingquan Long secured China’s third gold in the men’s 56-kilogram weightlifting event.
Here’s a live medal counter to keep track of Monday’s competitions and medal totals.
