Famous US DJ killed in Thailand Taxi Tragedy

Solomon Khan the DJ for Golden State Warriors

CHIANGRAI TIMES –  Solomon Khan, a popular Bay Area disc jockey best known for his role as the in-house DJ at Golden State Warriors home games, has died from injuries suffered during a car accident in Bangkok on Tuesday.

Solomon Khan was on tour in Thailand with his fiancée Nicole Cronin when the taxi the couple was riding stalled in traffic. The driver fled from the cab, leaving the Khan and Cronin inside when it was rammed from behind by another automobile. Khan was pronounced dead that same day.

Known to his fans as DJ Solomon, Kahn was on his first tour of Thailand, playing four dates in the country.

Solomon had been traveling all around the world for the past six or seven years, playing all the top nightclubs and venues,” said his brother, Amman Haggerty. He was recognized for his technical skills and ability to play music that really reached a lot of people but also brought a deeper spiritual intent to the mainstream club.

The son of Shabda Kahn of San Rafael, a Sufi spiritual leader and singer in the Hindustani classical music tradition, Solomon Kahn, of San Francisco, also had a close relationship with guitarist Terry Haggerty, a co-founder of the Marin band the Sons of Champlin.

Intent on a music career, he played his first gig as a DJ at a middle school prom in 1989, using only a tape deck and CD player.

After mastering more sophisticated equipment, he became a top nightclub DJ, pioneering what he dubbed “pop turntablism,” a genre now popularly known as “mashup,” a fusion of scratching, beat juggling, word play and mixing funk, soul, hip-hop, house music and rock tracks.

A resident DJ at a San Francisco club, he performed alongside Stevie Wonder, Steve Aoki, Z-Trip, De La Soul, Jurassic 5, DJ AM and other stars as his career skyrocketed.
