Family Searches for Answers after Canadian Found Dead in Phnom Penh Hotel
PHNOM PENH – A Canadian family is searching for answer in the death of thier son Vinny Bains, 42, found dead in a Cambodian hotel late last month believe his death is suspicious and are hoping an autopsy will help them find answers.
Vinny Bains arrived in Cambodia for the first time on June 21, four days before his body was found in a room at the Home Town Hotel on Street 172 in Phnom Penh near the popular riverside tourist destination.
“We have no idea what happened to him,†said his brother Sunny Bains from Canada. “Police have just reported he died of a heart attack.â€
His family is questioning the official cause of death released by authorities, due to the fact that Vinny had no known heart issues and allegations that the $4,000 he had with him had mysteriously disappeared.
Vinny’s brother Sunny said the Vinny had never been to the country before and had met with “total strangers†upon his arrival in Phnom Penh.
“The people we’re dealing with now we don’t even know them,†he said, adding they had been in contact with a Cambodian woman known only as “Sarah†and a French national who claimed to worked at the hotel named Tony Cecchini.
The family said Cecchini, who can reportedly be seen standing near Vinny’s body in photos released by Phnom Penh police, and Sarah were introduced to the family over the phone as friends of Vinny’s who were “taking care†of him, but the family said it has struggled to get information from them since.
Sunny said the lack of a medical report and the fact that his brother was pronounced dead of a heart attack at the scene despite no autopsy being conducted was suspicious.
Jessica Seguin, a spokeswoman from Foreign Affairs Canada, said that Canadian consular officials in Phnom Penh were in touch with local authorities and were providing assistance to the family as needed.
She said that further details about the case could not be released in order to protect the private and personal information of the individual.
