Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung offers Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra some advice while she chairs a meeting to explain the government’s policies to senior state officials at Government House

The cabinet yesterday approved a radical restructuring of provincial governors and Interior Ministry officials, a move seen as an attempt to boot from the ministry of people linked to the de facto leader Bhumjaithai Party Newin Chidchob.

Thirty-four transfers proposed by the ministry gave the green light, the second government spokesman.

Among those transferred was governor of Chiang Rai, Somchai Hatthayatanti, the Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung had promised during the general elections to remove. Mr. Somchai was transferred to an inactive position, as an inspector, an informed source said.

During the election campaign, Mr. Somchai was accused of not paying enough attention to Mr. Chalerm as he traveled north to conduct campaign activities in the province, the source said.

No replacement was named by Mr. Thanee. The fact that there is no substitute for some of the governors has added weight to speculation that the transfers soon be in sight of the Ministry of Interior, the same source.
