CHIANG RAI – The Pollution Control Department (PCD) Director-General Wijarn Simachaya spoke regarding the current haze situation in the northern region, saying despite the current problem of smoke haze in Chiang Rai, particulate matter readings at 78 micrograms per cubic mete, have not exceeded the safety threshold.

The 37th Military Circle and Chiang Rai provincial authorities have released a caravan to raise public awareness about the danger of wildfire.

Chiang Rai residents are told to refrain from burning activities until April 16th. Those violating the regulations will receive a maximum jail term of 1 month and/or a fine of 2,000 baht.

In addition, surveillance units are also being sent out so as to report any unauthorized burning activities in the region. Village headmen and local administrative officials have been assigned to take action against violators as well as coordinate firefighting efforts.

A similar campaign has also been launched in Phayao province to raise public awareness and monitor areas prone to forest fire.
