CHIANG RAI – Pol Lt Pitpatchara Pitchayanan, Deputy Inspector of Chiang Saen Immigration checkpoint has reported that Belgian National Bramewanden Bozer, 30, was arrested while leading a group of tourists to have lunch in Chiang Rai’s Chiang Saen district Saturday.

Pol Lt Pitpatchara Pitchayanan,  said Mr. Bozer, who was carrying a Belgian passport with 90-day tourist visa stamp, was charged with working as a tourist guide without a work permit.

Mr. Bozer was spotted by officials at a tourist site in Sanmakhet village using a loud-speaker to talk to a group of tourists like a guide.

Officials asked Mr. Bozer see his work permit however he could not produce one, stating that he was not a guide but he simply helped as an interpreter for the guide of the tour group.

According to Thai Visa he told officials he was assisting a group of 23 Dutch tourists to visit the Golden Triangle in Chiang Saen and was taking them to have lunch.

He was turned over to the Chiang Saen police station for further legal action.

Chiang Saen checkpoint officials stated that they had received a lot of complaints from Thai tourist guides that several foreign tourists had competed against them for tourist guide jobs.

The Thai guides said the many farang (foreigners) enter northern Thailand as tourists and then apply for jobs at tourist firms as interpreters.

According to Mae Sai Immigration several foreigners have been arrested in Northern Thailand for working undocumented as tourist guides.
