CHIANG RAI – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has ordered provincial offices to maintain tight pollution control as the air quality in the North remains unhealthy.

According to Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Chatchai Promlert, the air quality in the nine provinces of the North is considered moderate. Haze levels, however, could pose health risks. Residents were advised against all forms of burning so as not to worsen the situation.

The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation offices are closely monitoring the haze levels and carry out haze control operations at affected areas.

Relevant agencies are launching a campaign educating the public on the impact of haze and on how to safeguard themselves against air pollution during this period.

Meanwhile, The Meteorological Department is forecasted to experience a warmer climate, with the highest temperature expected at 43-44 degrees Celsius during mid-April in the Kingdom’s central region, according to TMD.

Director-General Wanchai Sakudomchai has revealed that Thailand will be facing a severe drought disaster along with a warmer climate, at 41 or up to 43-44 degrees Celsius in the lower Northern, upper Central, and lower Northeastern regions.

He has said however that the drought situation this year will not be the most severe Thailand has ever faced, despite the current harsh conditions.  The general public are advised to take good care of their health.

A tropical storm is forecasted to occur during 24-25 March 2016 due to cold winds from China, which will likely help bring down the temperature temporarily by 5 degrees and help ease the lack of water in some areas, however the TMD expects precipitation to be scarce.
