Food Allergy Medication Xolair Is FDA-Approved For Asthma

(CTN News) – A food allergy medication called Xolair has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for those with severe food allergies.

It was reported that Xolair is the brand name for omalizumab, a medicine given by injection to prevent or lessen the symptoms of allergic reactions when it comes to accidentally being exposed to allergens in food. Xolair is the name brand for omalizumab, which can be given by injection.

A safety net such as this is used to prevent a person from getting allergic reactions if they are accidentally exposed to an allergen, not as an emergency treatment, according to USA Today.

Depending on the weight of the patient as well as their response to an allergic trigger, the treatment can be given as early as 1 year olds and taken every 2 to 4 weeks as long as their weight remains stable.

It is also important to note that people with food allergies need to avoid certain foods that can cause a potentially fatal reaction, such as peanuts, cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts, milk products, eggs, and dairy products, even when they are taking Xolair,

Since Xolair helps reduce the reactions caused by food allergies.

The result of the treatment is that the patient is now able to be exposed to higher amounts of the food without getting a major reaction, however, it does not completely eliminate the reaction that occurs as a result of the treatment.

Consequently, this medication will not be able to eliminate food allergies or allow patients to eat food allergens freely, but it will reduce the health impact if food allergens are accidentally eaten,” Dr. Kelly Stone told the FDA when the medication was approved.

Dr. Stone is an associate director at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and is responsible for pulmonology, allergies, and critical care.

It isn’t the first time Xolair has been used to treat food allergies, even though the FDA recently approved it.

AP reports that it had been used as an “off-label” treatment by Dr. Ruchi Gupta, director of Northwestern’s Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research. An adult or child taking Xolair will pay between $2,900 and $5,000 a month for it, but it is covered by insurance, according to the AP.
