3.5 Tremor Hits Mae Fa Luang in Chiang Rai

According to statistics from the Seismology Office, minor quakes have been recorded in Mae Lao and Mae Suay districts of Chiang Rai province nearly everyday recently.

People in the district, Mae Chan and Mae Sai felt the tremors.

CHIANG RAI – The Office of Seismology of the Meteorological Department reported that the 3.5 magnitude earthquake took place at Latitude 20.18 degrees north and Longitude 99.57 degrees east with its epicenter five kilometers underground. The quake’s center was at Mae Fa Luang in Chiang Rai. People in the district, Mae Chan and Mae Sai felt the tremors.

Chiang Rai governor Phongsak Wangsamer instructed the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office and local administrative organizations to search for any damages and prepare assistance for the affected people.

Officials received no immediate reports of damage after an earthquake in Chiang Rai this morning at dawn, but the Governor has urged staff to be on the alert.Currently, there are still no reports of damage in the area. However, all staff will be ready to help should there be a big earthquake that affects people, said the governor.The Director of the Chiang Rai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office Mr. Sawang Momdee said that the office has ordered all local and village level operation centers to report any damage to the office. This earthquake is expected to be an aftershock that has caused only low damage.

The office calls however for all people to be prepared, but not panicked, and live with nature by building strong houses and practicing security drills, especially those people in areas with active faults such as the Mae Chan fault and the Mae Ing fault, said the office director.
